Brain Imaging Study Shows Long-term Impact of Blast-induced Brain Injuries in Veterans


Researchers at the Saint Louis University Advanced Neurosurgical Innovation Center (SANIC) presented data at a December 2013 conference for the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in Chicago. The results indicated that veterans who sustained mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) due to blast exposure exhibit long-term brain differences compared to healthy controls.  The researchers compared diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) values, an MRI technique used to identify microstructural injury to white matter, of 10 veterans with those of 10 healthy controls. Significant differences were seen between the two groups, and the DTI values correlated with attention, memory, and motor tests. Because veterans had sustained mTBI more than four years prior, on average, the results suggest the presence of a long-term impact of blast injury on the brain.
