Theological Studies, Minor
Examine theology and religion in all of its diversity and wrestle with today’s issues in connection with our complex histories through Saint Louis University’s minor in theological studies.
The minor provides a foundation for the study of religion across the globe, with a particular focus on Catholic and other Christian traditions. Courses offered by SLU’s Department of Theological Studies traverse a range of research methods, religious traditions, historical periods and places around the world.
After completion of the core course, an additional 15 credit hours of theological study are required to fulfill the minor requirements. These requirements allow flexibility for students to pursue nine credit hours of their choice, providing broadly applicable training in religion and faith, along with skills in research, critical thinking and communication that are helpful for any career.
Students must complete a minimum total of 18 credits for the minor.
At least nine credits must be taken at the 3xxx-level or above. A single course cannot be used to fill more than one requirement when pursuing this minor.

A student must maintain a 2.00 GPA in theology minor coursework.
The study of theology seeks to understand the interrelationship of God with humanity. It concerns basic life questions of the past and present, and trains students to evaluate and appreciate the most valuable and vital aspects of religious experience and thought. Through SLU-Madrid's minor in theological studies, you'll enter this investigation from an academic perspective to help you clarify your own understanding. SLU-Madrid approaches this study from the Christian Catholic tradition while respecting other religious traditions.
Theology is about God and how humans have lived, and continue to live, with God. It is, therefore, concerned with the most basic questions of life.
This minor trains students in various sources and methods to help them evaluate and appreciate the most vital aspects of religious experience and thought.
Curriculum Overview
SLU-Madrid's minor in theological studies requires students to complete 18 hours of coursework that meet the following requirements:
- THEO 1600 God: Stories and Questions (3 cr)
- THEO 2710 Religions of the World (3 cr)
- One elective course from "Sacred Texts" courses or from "Teachings in the Christian Tradition" courses (3 credit hours) such as:
- THEO 3430 Teachings in the Christian Tradition: God and Christ (3 cr)
- THEO 3435 Teachings in the Christian Tradition: Church and World (3 cr)
- THEO 2210 Introduction to the New Testament (3 cr)
- THEO 2210 Introduction to the New Testament (3 cr)
