Construction on Track for New SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital and Ambulatory Care Center
01/03/2019
Construction on the new SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital and Ambulatory Care Center is on track as 2018 saw the completion of several key milestones in the project’s schedule.
Over the past year, the area north of the hospital has been transformed from vacant lots into a bustling construction site where two large, distinctive structures are taking shape as the new, state-of-the-art $550 million hospital and ambulatory care facility.
SSM Health announced the plan to construct the new hospital and ambulatory care center in 2015. The paired structures will replace the current hospital. The announced construction also marked the start of the official partnership between SSM Health and Saint Louis University, as well as an expansion of the decades-long partnership between SSM Health and SLUCare Physician Group, the University’s academic medical practice.
2018's Milestones
Guests and employees of Saint Louis University and SSM Health celebrated the topping out of the hospital in a ceremony where the final steel beam was lowered into place. The beam bore the signatures of employees and well-wishers.
The Ambulatory Care Center’s steel structure was completed.
All foundation work for the entire SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital was completed.
Crews began installing drywall in the hospital, with terracotta and curtain walls being added to the exterior to enclose the hospital’s structure.
University leaders, SSM officials and local dignitaries including St. Louis Mayor Lyde Krewson, Congressman William Lacy Clay Jr. and Auxiliary Bishop Mark Rivituso, D.D., of the Archdiocese of St. Louis broke ground for the new hospital and care center in August 2017. Construction has been underway ever since. The relationship between SLU and SSM Health extends back more than a century.
The new hospital and ambulatory care center are slated to care for their first patients in September 2020.
Things to Look Forward to in 2019
Emergency generators will be installed, tested and made ready for the hospital’s 2020 opening.
Interior finishing work will begin in the hospital. Elevators will be installed.
Crews will begin building the new parking garage.
A new traffic sign will be installed on Grand Boulevard at the new hospital’s entrance.
