Community Work and Service
Dr. McMillin joined the College for Public Health and Social Justice in 2013 as the
director of the Master of Social Work degree program. He previously served as the
chief executive officer of a Catholic retirement community focused on bringing innovation
and culture change to long-term care. Dr. McMillin also served as an analyst in the
Office of the Inspector General for the Illinois Department of Children and Family
Services, as a program evaluator for the Ounce of Prevention Fund, and as an officer
in the United States Air Force chaplain corps.
He has 20 years of experience in intervention and prevention services for children,
families, and older adults. Dr. McMillin has published over 50 scholarly articles
and given over 90 scientific presentations on evidence-based practice, management,
and policy in health and social care. His research focuses on investigating and understanding
innovation and entrepreneurship approaches that advance social inclusion, civic and
environmental health, and the common good.
Dr. McMillin is a Fellow of the Society for Social Work and Research, where he chairs
the section on Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He is also a member of the
editorial board of the Journal of Religion and Spirituality in Social Work: Social
Thought. In our local community Dr. McMillin serves as a consultant for Renew Missouri,
a nonprofit that works to innovate and advance renewable energy and energy efficiency
for Missouri families.
