If you are a Saint Louis University — Madrid student and have suffered a sexual assault or other kind of assault, the counselors at the SLU-Madrid Counseling Center are here to support you and provide you with all the resources you need. Remember that you are not alone, nor should you have to deal with this on your own.
Counselors serve as confidential resources, ensuring that students who have experienced sexual assault, assault or misconduct can meet with them in complete confidentiality.
If you choose to report the incident, our counselors will provide support and talk with you about what to do next. They can provide information if you choose to report a case to the Spanish authorities and will guide you through the process according to SLU-Madrid Community Standards procedures for any incidents involving two SLU-Madrid students.
Whether you choose to report an incident or not, our counselors will support you and be there for you. Besides continued in-session support, they can also provide you with information about resources available in Madrid that you may need, such as resources for victims of sexual assault, STI testing, etc.
Protocol to Report a Sexual Assault
If you have been the victim of a sexual assault, the first step is to get to a safe place and get the medical attention or emergency help you need.
- Call 112 for emergencies, or 091 for police assistance.

In Spain, the process of reporting a sexual assault to the authorities can vary based on the nature of the assault. SLU-Madrid counselors can help you understand the details and guide you through this process, but here are a few things to remember:
- In most cases, it is best to file a report within the first 72 hours of the incident.
- In sexual assault cases that involve penetration, you have up to seven days to report the incident. In both cases, it is important that you do not shower before the authorities have had a chance to collect any physical evidence. This can be difficult, but it will be important later if you decide to report the sexual assault.
- To file the report, you can go directly to the Unidad de Atención a la Familia y Mujer (UFAM) at the Comisaría de Policía (Address: Avda. Doctor Federico Rubio y Gali, 55), or to one of the hospitals listed below to receive medical assistance and to obtain forensic evidence.
- After seven days, you can still file a report of a sexual assault with the police, although it will not be possible at that time to collect any samples or physical evidence.
Even if you are unsure if you want to pursue a police report or investigation, you may want to consider having a medical exam to collect evidence after an assault. The samples can be stored for future use, giving you time to decide what you want to do.

The Comunidad de Madrid has a comprehensive set of protocols to address sexual assault and gender violence, ensuring that support is available to all individuals, irrespective of their gender, sexual orientation, country of origin, and other factors. In addition to these protocols, there are dedicated institutions that cater to specific groups within the community. For instance, there are spaces specifically designed to support women, others focused on assisting men, and others that have additional resources available to LGBTQIA+ individuals.
