Saint Louis University’s Department of English offers students opportunities to explore the subject outside of the classroom through clubs, reading groups and publications.

English Clubs and Organizations

English Club

Saint Louis University’s undergraduate English Club hosts bi-weekly general meetings where members participate in creative writing and reading activities, discuss future club activities and explore opportunities for students interested in English. The club also participates in the English department’s annual student-faculty “Throwdown Bowling Challenge” and spring celebration.

Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society

Sigma Tau Delta is the national honorary society for students of English. A select organization open to both undergraduate and graduate students, Sigma Tau Delta recognizes significant scholastic accomplishment and seeks to provide a context in which students can find their interests in and enthusiasm for the study of English nurtured and stimulated.  

English Student Awards

Albert J. Montesi Award for Creative Achievement

The Albert J. Montesi Achievement Award recognizes undergraduate achievements in various forms of creative media. It is open to all undergraduates. The applicants are judged by creative writing faculty.

Helen Mandeville Prize in English Studies

The Helen Mandeville Prize in English Studies, established in 1993, is named in honor of a faculty member who contributed greatly to the study of English at Saint Louis University. It is awarded every year to an outstanding senior English major.

James D. Collins Award for the Outstanding Graduating Senior in English

The James D. Collins Award is awarded each spring by the department faculty, based on the student's academic achievements and co-curricular activities.

Publications

The Kiln Project

The Kiln Project is Saint Louis University’s undergraduate literary and visual arts magazine. It is published in the fall and spring semesters.

VIA

VIA is SLU’s journal of undergraduate research. Published each spring, it provides the opportunity for undergraduate students from any field to publish original, critical research projects.
