Otolaryngology Observership
The Saint Louis University Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery offers an observership program for students and doctors who wish to explore and expand their knowledge of otolaryngologic issues. The program is available to high school, undergraduate and medical students, as well as residents and practicing physicians.
Overview
This is a hands-off experience with no benefits, salary, stipends, medical insurance, transportation, accommodations or academic credit. Program participants will observe clinic, operating room and departmental functions. They may not contact patients or be responsible for their care.
- Limited to ages 18 and above (age 16 or 17 with parental permission)
- No more than two weeks duration
- No access to patient rooms on isolation precautions
Completion of the necessary documents does not ensure approval to observe. Applicants are subject to an approval process.

Internal Applicants
Current SLU undergraduate or medical students who have questions or wish to schedule shadowing opportunities should contact Tina Vandever at ent@slucare.ssmhealth.com or call 314-617-3958.
Medical school graduates must apply through the graduate medical education office. Please allow up to 90 days for processing. For more information, email gme@slucare.ssmhealth.com.
External Applicants
Students from institions outside of SLU who are interested in shadowing providers at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital may submit their application online.
Applicants must have a valid visa or U.S. passport; the department does not offer visa sponsorship.
Application packets must be postmarked six weeks before the preferred observership start date and include the following documents:
- Completed application
- Copy of valid visa or U.S. passport
- CV
- Vaccination record
